Chapter Fourteen

THEY’D PLANNED TO HEAD up to Frankton early, giving them plenty of time to explore the area before the Waka Ama competition started tomorrow. But an early morning phone call requesting a quote for the refitting of a bathroom and kitchen to make it more accessible for the elderly homeowner, delayed his and Grant’s departure by several hours. Corryn knew he could have put it off until next week, except he hated to keep people waiting especially when the work being requested would impact the client’s life for the better. A few hours of disruption to his morning might mean the client spent fewer weeks struggling to maintain their independence.

Two hours later they were on the road.

Three hours and one stop for sheep crossing the road as a farmer moved them between paddocks, Corryn and Grant finally arrived at their hotel.

One hot shower and a thirty-minute unscheduled nap, he and Grant headed out to explore Frankton.

Corryn couldn’t remember when he’d last visited the area. Might have been almost twenty-years ago when the trek up to Queenstown for New Year’s had been considered a rite of passage. But as time passed, the appeal of sitting around on the foreshore of Lake Wakatipu and getting blackout drunk while avoiding the cops—because none of them were old enough to be drinking—faded. These days he’d rather welcome in the new year sitting on Grant’s back deck with friends and family, drinking beers that didn’t taste like shit while manning the barbeque... Fuck, I’ve gotten old.

Everything about the place was different. Less rural and more metropolitan. Hell, the last time he’d come up this way, shopping in Frankton consisted of a dairy, a fish and chip shop and bottle store. Now it had a freaking mall. It was beginning to look more like a vacation spot for Aucklanders than for Southlanders as it once had been.

“Any ideas on where to get food?” Corryn asked, his stomach already protesting that it had been several hours since he’d eaten. “You know this place better than me, these days.”

Grant huffed. “It’s been eight months since I last visited the area, but I think there was a really good Thai place... don’t think it was in Queenstown or Arrowtown.”

“Well, it’s been longer than that for me. You’ve got a better chance of finding us somewhere to eat that isn’t simply grabbing fish and chips and sitting down by the lake.”

“The only fish and chips you’ll get here will be the expensive kind, served up on plates with salad.”

“Figures.” Corryn chuckled, shaking his head. “But even that sounds good right now.”

As Grant’s energy began to flag, they quickly considered their options and decided on a small nearby restaurant. At first glance the place didn’t appear
